lyric essay journals First published in The Believer, July, 2003. The Genre Artist. If a story takes place, as we are told stories do, then who or what does it take that place from, and why is an self, acquisition verb—take—necessary to history describe the activity of stories? Maybe it’s an unfair, literalizing question. Not all figures of reliance theme, speech need to about The Pool Party be prodded for accuracy (although shouldn’t a phrase relating to stories, which are made of language, have some passing precision?). Stories would keep taking place whether or not we worried about what it meant for self reliance theme, them to Schools Essay do so, or worried about what stories actually did instead. But if we poked at this strange phrase, which suggests a theft of setting in self theme, order for narrative to My Hard Time Essay occur, we might also deduce that if a place is taken for something to happen in it, then this taking must happen at self theme a specific time (that’s what the word “happen” asks us to believe, anyway). The verb “take” presumes duration, implies a moment (unless we take a break from time or take the opportunity to no longer experience time , options that are difficult, at best, to secure, unless we die).
It is this specific time that is Public Essay meant to concern us when we encounter what is likely the most well known (i.e., terrifying) story opener of all: once upon a time. Imbedded in this innocent phrase, which I would like to self reliance prod for the rest of this paragraph until it leaks an interesting jelly, is a severally redundant claim of occurrence, perhaps the first thing a reader, or listener, must be promised (reader: consumer of history, artificial time). For the sake of self reliance theme, contrast, to look at a more rigorously dull example, the opener “I have an idea” does not offer the Party, same hope, or seduction, or promise (particularly if I am the “I”). Even the verb is static and reliance suggests nothing approximating a moment. Time is being excluded, and look at gillette history all the people already falling asleep. “Once upon a time” is far more promising (something happened, something happened!).
We might need to believe that the theme, clock is ticking before we begin to invest our sympathies, our attentions, our energy. Fiction has, of course, since dropped this ingratiating, hospitable opener in favor of subtler seductions, gentler heraldings of story. But it is rare not to feel the clock before the first page is lay dying setting done, a verb moving the people and furniture around (whereas “having an idea” does not allow us to picture anything, other than, possibly, a man on a toilet). The physical verbs are waiting to assert themselves, to self provide moments that we are meant to believe in, and verbs, traditionally, are what characters use to stir up the trouble we call fiction. Public Schools Essay! Without physical verbs we have static think pieces, essays, philosophical musings. There is no stirring, because generally there is theme nobody there holding a spoon. This will be an Public, interesting distinction to remember.
Maybe this is as it should be, since Proust said the duty of the literary artist was to tell the truth about time. Reliance! Aside from blanching at the notion of duty, which is one of the required notions to blanch at, it seems clear to me that Proust’s edict, interpreted variously, has served as a bellwether for to kill a mockingbird, most thriving traditions of self, fiction (which held true, of course, before Proust articulated it). If fiction has a main theme, a primary character, an occupation, a methodology, a criteria, a standard, a purpose (is there anything else left for fiction to have?), it would be time itself. Fiction is the production of false time for gillette, readers to experience. Most fiction seeks to become time . Without time, fiction is nonfiction. Yes, that’s arguable—we have Borges, Roussel, Christine Brooke-Rose, and Robbe-Grillet, after all, among others, to tell us otherwise, and it is in part their legacy, their followers (witting or not), whose pages will be shaken here until we have something that counts for a portrait of this anti-story tradition. One basic meaning of narrative, then: to reliance theme create time where there was none. A fiction writer who tells stories is a maker of time.
Not liking a story might be akin to not believing in its depictions of My Hard Essay, time. It sounds facile to say that stories occur, but it is part of the larger, relentless persuasion that time both is and envelops the practice we call story. We cannot easily separate the two. Yet if time is the reliance theme, most taken-for-granted aspect of fiction writing, it would seem precisely like the good hard wall a young, ambitious writer would want to chapter to kill a mockingbird bang his head against, in order to walk and talk newly in the world of fiction (that’s still the desire, right?). To the writer searching for the obstacle to surpass , time would look plenty worthy a hurdle. If something must be overcome, ruined, subverted in order for fiction to self theme stay matterful (yes, maybe the metaphor of progress in literary art is pretentious and Public Schools Essay tired at this point (there’s time again, aging what was once such a fine idea)), then time would be the thing to beat, the thing fiction seemingly cannot do without, and self reliance therefore, to grow or change, must. John Haskell is among an intriguing new group of writers chiseling away at gillette the forms of fiction writing without appearing exhaustingly experimental (read: unreadable). Haskell is reliance working primarily without or around time, producing fiction that might appear more essayistic, discursive, inert, philosophical, and, well, literally timeless (which is not yet to say that his debut book is for the ages ). Yes, I said “inert,” because things do not have to history move to be interesting. Think mountain. Think dead person.
Think thought. I say “think,” because Haskell is self reliance theme a thinker, and although he writes often about film, you could not film what he writes. I Am Not Jackson Pollock contains some storylike moments, but it is primarily a new kind of fiction, one that, curiously, hardly seems interested in fiction at gillette all (which is not to suggest that it reads autobiographically—the opposite is true, which makes a great case for secret-keeping). Haskell might be indebted to Borges, but not in the way most so-called imaginative writers are. There’s no obsession with infinity and worlds within worlds, no conceptual masterminding at work to showcase a stoner’s tripped-out, house-of-Escher mentality, not much that would qualify as being made up. Haskell is more interested in using modest, unassuming forms of nonfiction, as did Borges or Sterne (albeit Haskell does not perpetrate extravagant untruths): the essay, the report, the biographical sketch, the reliance theme, character analysis (this last is Haskell’s favorite, from real people like Glenn Gould and Schools Jackson Pollock, to self reliance theme film characters like Anthony Perkins’s innkeeper in Psycho , to Topsy, the first elephant executed by electricity). Haskell does not write characters so much as he writes about them, and Essay The Pool Party it is reliance theme this willful instinct toward exposition that is so curiously distinctive and article 231 treaty of versailles unusual in the story-driven world of reliance, most new fiction. A fair question here might be this: where is the fiction in this, if these “stories” of Haskell’s refuse story and article then faithfully essay to self reliance supply information, respectable information, analysis, and reflection, just as nonfiction might? And one fair answer might be: John Haskell’s primary fiction, overriding his entire project, the place where his fiction is lay dying setting located, is precisely in self reliance theme, his puzzling gesture of calling these pieces fiction in the first place. Public Schools Essay! He is theme fictionalizing his genre. Or, in other words, his fiction is genre itself.
Haskell is not an artist in a particular genre, he is an artist of genre. To do what Haskell does is to Essay about take several genuine risks, which occasions a word or two about risk. What could a writer in our country possibly be risking, other than his own pride, livelihood, or publishability, which are not exactly noble losses should they actually be lost? (Many of us began writing without pride and publishability anyway, and I’m not exactly clear what livelihood is.) Yet risk is the most urgent exhortation of what we are supposed to take when we write fiction (which is self reliance theme somehow different from the Essay, kind of taking a story does when it takes place). Fiction is praised when it is called “risky,” but this sort of risk usually involves shattering, shameful disclosures. (I could fill the rest of this essay with examples of shattering, shameful disclosures, but maybe just one will do: while wrestling with my dog, experimenting on a new hold called “the Sumatra,” we ended up horizontal on the lawn, head to toe, and thereupon commenced a directed nuzzling, a purposeful mouth-to-balls activity, that in some quarters of academe is referred to as the sixty-nine, which then became a standard “variation” on the “Sumatra,” well into adulthood (especially into adulthood)). Self Theme! With secret-telling having become its own lucrative industry, it’s hard to fathom what a risk of subject-matter might be (though I’m certain better, scarier secrets are approaching in Party, next season’s books, however ill-equipped my imagination is to conceive them). Risks of form, on the other hand, might seem more provocative, more inherently interesting to those attuned to the established modes and means of fiction writing (Hey, you guys!), but the risk more often cited in these cases is the financial sort that a publisher takes in publishing such work. Self Reliance! They risk not selling enough books.
And they are sorry but they cannot take that risk (it is interesting that the writer is supposed to Schools be risky while the publisher is self not). Risk might very well have a more palpable financial meaning than an Essay about The Pool, artistic one. So while it is no longer clear what literary risk is—perhaps the term has been molested to death, like those other harassed words: edgy, innovative, startling, stunning—it could be more appropriate to say that within the larger, hapless chance-taking of writing at reliance theme all (when indifference is about the scariest, and likeliest, response most of us might face), writing fiction without story seems especially curious, willfully self-marginalizing, and therefore very much worth considering. (No, not all obscure literary gestures are “interesting,” but something akin to Overcoming My Hard Essay playing golf without one’s body, as John Haskell might be doing, is.) The shopworn adage “show-don’t-tell” reinforces the ethos that fiction must have a story, and warns a writer away from discursive, essayistic moments and exposition, which apparently amount to a kind of quicksand for the writer (a statement that presupposes motion as a valuable aspect of fiction writing). Haskell’s quicksand is rich as a batter and quite worth getting trapped in, although so much inertia can feel confining. If we are to be cast in self theme, mud, and then smothered, we want our demise to Essay be fascinating. Telling is supposedly insufficient, it cannot produce a quality demise, since it does not dramatize a moment, or in self reliance, fact does not even supply a moment at all. Lay Dying! Telling is stingy with time. Yet even though we “tell” a story, we only do it well when we do not actually tell it, but show that story occurring in time. Does telling fail because it discriminates against self theme, the notion of Overcoming My Hard Time Essay, moments entirely?
Take this paragraph in Haskell’s story, “The Faces of self reliance theme, Joan of Arc.” Hedy Lamarr, through most of the movie, takes the side of those in authority, which is not the article 231 treaty, same as having authority. Obedience is a way of self reliance, reconciling oneself to a lack of authority or a lack of Overcoming Time, choice. But it’s not the only way. This is a funny (read: not-so-funny) way to reliance start a section in a story, but this is Haskell in as i setting, his psychological mode, and it’s a tone he turns to frequently, which can make parts of theme, this book sound eerily similar to the DSM-IV-TR Case Studies: A Clinical Guide to Differential Diagnosis . His exposition is dutiful and persistent, but he oddly does not seem to be using it to generate sympathy, which is what a narrative writer might hope for chapter 10 summary to kill, after disclosing details of self, character. Minimalism in fiction, which at its best extracted psychology purely from surfaces, would be anathema to history Haskell. One of his favorite things to do, his pet point throughout the book, is to probe the interior conflicts within a character, but the reliance, effect is lay dying setting rather more coldly intellectual than warmly empathic:
She creates a space between what she does and who she feels she is, so at least she can live with a little peace. He wanted to let whatever it was inside of him come out, and reliance then change it, and by changing that he was hoping everything else would change. Inside that bubble he could relax and let who he was come out. She waited until what the camera wanted was fairly close to what she wanted, and Essay about The Pool Party although this wasn’t a perfect arrangement, she could pretend to stand it. … the man wanted to self reliance bring out chapter 10 summary to kill, whatever it was inside the boy. Haskell is reliance theme expert at clarifying the moments when his characters feel estranged from themselves.
The defiance of article 231 treaty of versailles, Haskell’s title is a form of self-denial echoed throughout most of these stories. He is so shrewd at self theme depicting this sort of moment, that for him it is apparently sufficient to carry whole stories. Once he has achieved the revelation, he seems ready to end his story. If he has a deficiency, it’s his inability to to kill convert his fascinations into self, whole pieces of history, writing that prove the artistic adequacy of his idea. If Haskell is desperate to show us how people hide from themselves and conspire against their own better interests, working as multiple identities in self, agonizing contexts—which is, after all, a familiar enough idea routinely explored, or dramatized, by many writers—then it’s upon him to make our experience of lay dying, this idea immediate, visceral, and potently refreshed. Maybe it’s not upon him , but when the idea is self centralized, as it is in Haskell’s work, and narrative is deliberately excluded, there is a risk when that idea does not seem novel. To be fair, Haskell has no real comforting tradition to fall back on, to guide him in his efforts, so he must invent for himself what an ending, in this sort of writing, might look like.
It’s an 231 treaty of versailles, original path he has chosen, and it will be rewarding to watch this exceptional writer as he navigates this new territory for fiction. When a prose writer such as Haskell surmises a distinction between story and fiction, as he so intriguingly has, a critic can safely ask after the absent story and not be upbraided for assuming that fiction must have one. A writer thus interested anyway in reliance, dividing the gillette, two projects risks an error of category, or at reliance the least risks being read incorrectly (not that reading correctly sounds like a very compelling thing to 231 treaty be doing). But when, for example, David Markson, an expository novelist who fired the starting gun for self reliance, fictions of information and proved that pure exposition can be alarmingly moving, who purposefully tells instead of chapter 10 summary to kill a mockingbird, shows, is dismissed in The New York Times for failing to provide a story in his novel Reader’s Block , no discussion follows about why, exactly, fiction must have one (at 150 words in self reliance, the book review, how could any discussion follow?). Nor do we learn what a story might have looked like in such an exquisitely felt book that, to summarize, catalogs the various ways historical figures have hated whole races of people and/or died by their own hands. (Yes, you should read this book.) Markson should have presumably, under the fiction-must-have-a-story criteria , zeroed in on one of his hundreds of characters and gone deep, doing that good old-time psychological work, the person-making stuff, dramatizing how such an interesting fellow had gone on to hate Jews and/or kill himself. Markson should have used more words like “then.” He should have sequenced.
He seems to article 231 treaty have forgotten that literature is supposedly a time-based art. Markson’s amnesia is one of the self reliance theme, happy accidents of the last decade of fiction writing. By eschewing a fetishistic, conventional interest in character, or a dutiful allegiance to moment creation, to occurrence itself, Markson accomplishes what a story, slogging through time and obedient to momentum, arguably could not: a commanding, obsessive portrait of single behaviors throughout history, a catalog of atrocity that overwhelms through relentless example. Lay Dying! In truth, it’s a novel that can be read as an essay, but unlike most essays, it’s lyrically shrewd, poetry in the form of history, and it’s brave enough to provide creepy, gaping holes where we normally might encounter context (the burden of the conventional essayist). This might explain a new category of writing, the lyric essay, swelling special issues of literary magazines (such as The Seneca Review ) and, in self theme, particular, a new, provocative anthology: The Next American Essay , edited (orchestrated, masterminded, realized) by John D’Agata, the form’s single-handed, shrewd champion. Overcoming Time Essay! The lyric essayist seems to enjoy all of the liberties of the self reliance theme, fiction writer, with none of a fiction writer’s burden of unreality, the nasty fact that none of this ever really happened that a fiction writer daily wakes to. One can never say of the chapter to kill a mockingbird, lyric essayist’s work that “it’s just fiction,” a vacuous but prevalent dismissal akin to criticizing someone with his own name. The lyric essay is a rather ingenious label, since the essayist supposedly starts out reliance theme, with something real, whereas the fiction writer labors under a burden to prove, or create, that reality, and Overcoming My Hard Time Essay can expect mistrust and doubt from a reader at the outset. In fiction, lyricism can look like evasion, special pleading, pretension. In the essay, it is apparently artistic, a lovely sideshow to self reliance theme The Real that, if you let it, will enhance what you think you know.
The implied secret here is that one of the smartest ways to Public and Private Schools Essay write fiction today is to say that you’re not, and self then do whatever you very well please. Overcoming Time Essay! Fiction writers take note. Some of the best fiction is self reliance theme these days being written as nonfiction. The Next American Essay proceeds chronologically from 1975 to 2003, from John McPhee (a re-animated Monopoly game) to Jenny Boully (all footnotes, no text), with D’Agata practicing his own artful transitions before each piece, waxing witty, smart, personal, mute, cleverly obtuse, passionate, lucid, myopic. D’Agata’s transitions alone, which show how alive an anthology can be, and would make any editor envious, provide a toolbox of categorically adulterous leapfrogs that could outfit a whole new generation of writers with the skills to and Private launch an impressive and relevant movement of theme, writing. D’Agata as editor seems capable of reconfiguring almost anyone’s writing, like Robert Ashley collating found music into his own opera.
D’Agata decides what’s beautiful and as i lay dying setting makes it so through expert arrangement. There are writers here, Sherman Alexie among them, who must have been surprised to discover their stories qualified as lyric essays. D’Agata justifies the choice of Alexie by claiming that fiction is a protective term, providing shelter for difficult material, which is really essayistic in self, nature. Article 231 Treaty Of Versailles! All fiction writers should be so lucky. The flagship practitioner of the lyric essay, who seems early on reliance theme to have inspired D’Agata’s editorial imagination, is the Canadian poet Anne Carson.
Under the banner of poetry, Carson has produced some of the most rigorously intelligent and beautiful writing of the last ten years: essays, stories, arguments, poems, most provocatively in lay dying setting, her early collection, Plainwater . Her piece, “Short Talks,” which she describes as one-minute lectures, and which moves through the history of philosophy like a flip-book of civilization, offering stern commandments and self reliance theme graceful fall-aways, simultaneously qualifies as fiction, poetry, and essay, and is championed protectively by ambassadors from each genre. The loose criteria for the lyric essay seems to invoke a kind of nonfiction not burdened by research or fact, yet responsible (if necessary) to sense and poetry, shrewdly allegiant to as i lay dying no expectations of genre other than the demands of self, its own subject. If that sounds strangely like fiction, several of the writers included here, Harry Mathews, Carole Maso, and Essay about The Pool Party Lydia Davis among them, first published their pieces in that genre, and will no doubt continue to. Others, like Carson or Boully or Joe Wenderoth, have consistently termed their work poetry. Thalia Field has published her singular writing under the label of fiction, although it seems better read as poetry. Theme! Here, of course, it is an essay, as are works of autobiography.
David Antin shows up with more of his astonishingly boring diaries, continuing his decades-long ruse of consequence. Thankfully he cannot single-handedly ruin an anthology. David Shields provides a Lishian catalog of cliches that accrue curious meanings and expose how revealing banal language can actually be. And stalwarts like Joan Didion, David Foster Wallace, and Susan Sontag throw in with fierce, ambitious contributions that actually always were essays, although this lack of genre-hopping is in the minority. Sadly absent from and Private, what is otherwise one of the most significant anthologies published in theme, years are a few true voices of the essay who would have fit right in Overcoming, with these other inspired eccentrics, among them: Daniel Harris, Lawrence Weschler, Joy Williams, and reliance theme Dallas Wiebe. One instantly wonders how the chosen genre appellation liberates or constricts the writer, and Overcoming My Hard Essay whether or not John Haskell, absent from D’Agata’s all-star selection, would have fared better (whatever that might mean) under a different label, with someone like D’Agata warming-up for him. Might he be more appreciated as a lyric essayist, an artist of information not saddled by conventional readerly expectations? I ask because Haskell seems to theme suffer slightly when evaluated as a fiction writer, when one brings hopes of story to his book, which are hard not to chapter 10 summary bring. There’s the implied tedium of fiction not driven by story, particularly if a reader is expecting one (of course tedium, as Robbe-Grillet showed, can have its thrills). With storyless fiction, one suspects an intellectual lesson is at hand, instead of reliance, entertainment (this must either be fun or it must be good for me), with a reader’s pleasure not high on the author’s agenda. Article! Expectation can flatten a reader’s willingness to forestall desires for story.
It is similar to feeling forever trapped in a flashback, waiting for the current scene. A reader saves attention and reliance energy if he senses that what he’s reading is not primary, the and Private Essay, thing itself, and that the reliance theme, real story is ahead, and gillette attention is the commodity the self reliance, writer is a mockingbird striving to create, at self reliance theme all costs. Haskell’s book could very nearly be shelved uncontested in the film studies section of the bookstore, and here it might perform its rogue fictionalizations with more astonishment, reversing his style of ambush, so to speak, since it is much more a collection of film studies with bursts of Public, unreality, than it is a burst of self reliance theme, unreality with moments of film studies. It might just be that the genre bending fiction writers—John Haskell, David Markson among them—so far, lack a champion like John D’Agata, although there’s no reason to 231 treaty think that he won’t be luring more fiction writers into his protective, liberating fold, where these categories can cease to matter. Once upon a time there will be readers who won’t care what imaginative writing is called and will read it for its passion, its force of intellect, and for its formal originality.

1000 essays The remainder of this essay writing tutorial is based on a short sample #039;divorce essay#039; (about 1,000 words). To complete all of the reliance, associated tasks, it is easiest if you have the sample essay in front of you. A major change that has occurred in the Western family is an increased incidence in divorce. As I Setting! Whereas in the past, divorce was a relatively rare occurrence, in recent times it has become quite commonplace. This change is borne out self, clearly in census figures. For example thirty years ago in Australia, only one marriage in ten ended in divorce; nowadays the figure is My Hard more than one in self reliance, three (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 1996: p.45). A consequence of this change has been a substantial increase in the number of single parent families and Essay, the attendant problems that this brings (Kilmartin, 1997). An important issue for sociologists, and indeed for all of society, is why these changes in marital patterns have occurred.
In this essay I will seek to theme critically examine a number of sociological explanations for the #039;divorce phenomenon#039; and also consider the social policy implications that each explanation carries with it. It will be argued that the best explanations are to be found within a broad socio-economic framework. 10 Summary To Kill A Mockingbird! One type of explanation for rising divorce has focused on changes in laws relating to marriage. For example, Bilton, Bonnett and self reliance theme, Jones (1987) argue that increased rates of divorce do not necessarily indicate that families are now more unstable. 10 Summary A Mockingbird! It is self reliance theme possible, they claim, that there has always been a degree of marital instability. They suggest that changes in the law have been significant, because they have provided unhappily married couples with #039;access to a legal solution to My Hard Time Essay pre-existent marital problems#039; (p.301). Reliance Theme! Bilton et al. therefore believe that changes in divorce rates can be best explained in terms of changes in the legal system. The problem with this type of explanation however, is that it does not consider why these laws have changed in the first place. It could be argued that reforms to gillette family law, as well as the increased rate of divorce that has accompanied them, are the product of more fundamental changes in society. Another type of explanation is one that focuses precisely on these broad societal changes. For example, Nicky Hart (cited in Haralambos, 1995) argues that increases in divorce and marital breakdown are the result of reliance, economic changes that have affected the family.
One example of these changes is the raised material aspirations of families, which Hart suggests has put pressure on both spouses to article 231 treaty of versailles become wage earners. Women as a result have been forced to reliance become both homemakers and economic providers. Article 231 Treaty Of Versailles! According to Hart, the contradiction of these two roles has lead to conflict and this is the main cause of reliance, marital breakdown. It would appear that Hart#039;s explanation cannot account for all cases of divorce - for example, marital breakdown is 231 treaty liable to occur in families where only the self reliance, husband is working. Nevertheless, her approach, which is to relate changes in family relations to as i lay dying broader social forces, would seem to be more probing than one that looks only at legislative change.
The two explanations described above have very different implications for social policy, especially in relation to self reliance how the problem of increasing marital instability might be dealt with. Bilton et al. (1995) offer a legal explanation and hence would see the solutions also being determined in this domain. If rises in divorce are thought to be the consequence of liberal divorce laws, the obvious way to stem this rise is to make them less obtainable. This approach, one imagines, would lead to a reduction in divorce statistics; however, it cannot really be held up as a genuine solution to the problems of history, marital stress and breakdown in society. Indeed it would seem to be a solution directed more at symptoms than addressing fundamental causes. Furthermore, the experience of social workers, working in theme, the area of family welfare suggests that restricting a couple#039;s access to divorce would in some cases serve only to exacerbate existing marital problems (Johnson, 1981).
In those cases where violence is involved, the consequences could be tragic. Apart from all this, returning to more restrictive divorce laws seems to be a solution little favoured by Australians. (Harrison, 1990). Hart (cited in as i, Haralambos, 1995), writing from a Marxist-feminist position, traces marital conflict to changes in the capitalist economic system and their resultant effect on the roles of men and women. It is difficult to know however, how such an reliance theme, analysis might be translated into practical social policies. This is because the Hart program would appear to require in the first place a radical restructuring of the economic system. Whilst this may be desirable for some, it is not achievable in Public Schools, the present political climate. Hart is right however, to suggest that much marital conflict can be linked in some way to the economic circumstances of families. This is borne out in self reliance theme, many statistical surveys which show consistently that rates of divorce are higher among socially disadvantaged families (McDonald, 1993). This situation suggests then that social policies need to be geared to providing support and security for as i lay dying setting, these types of theme, families. It is little cause for optimism however, that in recent years governments of Overcoming My Hard, all persuasions have shown an increasing reluctance to fund social welfare programs of this kind.
It is difficult to offer a comprehensive explanation for the growing trend of marital breakdown; and it is self reliance theme even more difficult to find solutions that might ameliorate the problems created by about The Pool Party, it. Clearly though, as I have argued in this essay, the most useful answers are to be found not within a narrow legal framework, but within a broader socio-economic one. Finally, it is worth pointing out that, whilst we may appear to be living in a time of increased family instability, research suggests that historically, instability may have been the norm rather than the exception. As Bell and Zajdow (1997) point out, in the past, single parent and step families were more common than is assumed - although the disruptive influence then was not divorce, but the premature death of one or both parents. This situation suggests that in studying the self, modern family, one needs to employ a historical perspective, including the possibility of looking to the past in searching for ways of dealing with problems in the present.

define essayiste The Academic Essay. The academic essay is merely a specific writing genre#150;as is the love letter, newspaper editorial, or pop-fiction. As a genre, it functions within a set of norms, rules, and conventions. The purpose of this discussion is to make clear to you what those rules and norms are, and how to use them to express your argument clearly. The purpose of the academic essay is to persuade by reasoned discourse. Scholars use the essay amongst themselves to advance ideas. Its value as an instructional tool is to assist students in developing their critical thinking skills. As you recall, critical thinking is defined as: the theme, ability to read theory accurately, appropriate it meaningfully, apply it independently, generate results based on that application, analyze the results, and form a clear argument based on those results that can be defended with a specific line of gillette history, reasoning.
A good academic essay engenders this process and clearly demonstrates that the process has been performed successfully. With this in mind let's examine how to write an academic essay. Do you frequently find yourself struggling with the introduction to your essays? Do you not know how to begin the essay? Do you find yourself searching for a generalizing statement that will get things going, and trying to reliance theme find a delicate balance between BS'ing and as i, saying something meaningful? If so, that's because you are not following the norms for the introduction to the academic essay. Following this norm actually makes introductions a piece of cake and gets you right into self theme the body of the essay. Here is the norm: The purpose of the introduction is two-fold: 1. To introduce the theoretical framework that will guide your analysis. 2. To introduce the article of versailles, thesis statement that will organize your paper.
Following this norm allows you to cut to the chase. No more generalizing statements of philosophical speculation that you venture forth hoping that it won't get shot down. You know, crap like Hemingway was perhaps one of the reliance theme, most visionary authors of his time. or The Western is perhaps the most uniquely American of all the genres. Rather, if the purpose of the essay is to demonstrate that you have appropriated a theory and applied it independently to Essay The Pool Party produce results, then the reliance, function of the Overcoming My Hard Essay, introduction becomes more focused: to introduce the theory#150;or theoretical framework#150;that you have decided to use. Hence you will find that many essays begin with such statements as In his book. Or, In her essay. IMPORTANT NOTE: One of the theme, main reasons that the norm of the Introduction developed this way is because of an important rule of the as i lay dying setting, Academic Essay: Avoid making statements that you cannot prove. The problem with the self theme, generalizing/philosophical/BS'ing statements like Hemingway. and The Western. is that they cannot be proven through reasoned discourse. Moreover, to even try and Essay about Party, do so would require voluminous amounts of discourse for something that is not even your thesis: what you actually ARE setting out to self reliance prove. As a result, the genre of the Academic Essay has evolved into article 231 treaty of versailles the above norm.
It still meets an self reliance introduction's purpose of Essay Party, orienting the reader, it just does so in a very specific manner. Having accomplished that, the expectation for an essay is self theme that you will introduce a thesis statement that is directly related to that theoretical framework (or its application). As a result, a major convention of the Public and Private Essay, academic essay is that: The introduction ends with the thesis statement. Having stated a thesis, you are expected to then go and prove it through the body of the essay. That said, it is important to discuss what's at self reliance stake in making a thesis statement. There are four basic logical forms for a thesis statement: #149; A banal thesis statement. #149; A simple thesis statement.
#149; A complex thesis statement. #149; An impossible thesis statement. Let's discuss each of these quickly before moving on. A banal thesis statement is a statement that does not really say anything#150;it is in fact meaningless because it is either so overly general or so evident as to not be of gillette history, significance. Here's an self reliance theme example from literature. Essay The Pool Party! A frequent argument students will make is This author used symbolism to make his point.
The statement, however, is meaningless precisely because it is not of significance: every author writing literature uses symbolism of one kind or another, either using language metaphorically or metonymically. Thus, to attempt to self theme single out or make a distinction of a piece for using symbolism is to not say anything that even needs proving to begin with. A simple thesis statement is not quite what it may sound like. History! A simple thesis statement means that only one main point or argument is going to be proved. The term simple argument can thus be misleading because the argument itself can and reliance theme, frequently is very theoretically sophisticated. What makes them simple is that in terms of their logical structure, they only take on one line of proof, and hence, their organization of proof will be simple.
One has to be careful, however, because sometimes one main argument may require SEVERAL supporting arguments. History! The example here would be the argument that Star Wars belongs within the Western Genre. Here the writer has only one thing to prove, but in order to do so will have to self reliance theme establish the elements that comprise the Western Genre and Time Essay, demonstrate how the film embodies them--not a small task. Simple thesis statements are eminently preferable in terms of writing an essay for a course. Self! It allows you to focus on your points and your proofs rather than getting lost in the organization of your arguments. A complex thesis statement means that the thesis has more than one point to Schools Essay prove. In this respect, the essay will have to organize more than one line of reasoning in so far that more than one thing has to be proven.
Complex theses are not necessarily more theoretically sophisticated than simple thesis statements, they are only more difficult to organize clearly. Reliance! In this respect, they are not worth what they entail and should be avoided. An example of a complex thesis statement would be something like: Faulkner's novels critique the ideologies of patriarchy and and Private, racism. This would be an appropriate analysis for the work of Faulkner, but I'm not sure it would be worth it. To begin with, it is not clear what the writer has to gain in self theme, terms of about Party, proving BOTH of these aspects of the work rather than just the one. Instead, with this complex thesis, there are going to self reliance theme be long sections of the essay where half of what needs to be proved will be left suspended while the Schools Essay, other half gets discussed. In addition, the thesis picks the work of Faulkner which necessitates discussing every book, rather than just one. Self! Thus it is that an Overcoming My Hard important convention of the academic essay is that: A complex thesis statement can usually be restructured into self reliance a more theoretically sophisticated (if not interesting) simple thesis statement. Making an as i Argument. As stated earlier, the academic essay is an exercise in reliance theme, reasoned persuasion.
In this respect, the thesis statement is an important organizational structure insofar as it establishes how the rest of the essay will be organized. Classical logic maintains that there are 3 basic kinds of persuasive statements: statements of fact, statements of value (or evaluation), and statements of policy (or action, which argue what we should do). Unless otherwise specified, the first of these, the statement of fact, is the form that the thesis statement for an academic essay should take#150;the obvious exception being when you write evaluative criticism (which you will NEVER do in my course). Statements of fact can themselves be grouped into two basic forms: arguments of classification, and arguments of operation or function. It is possible to make other distinctions, like for example, arguments of relationship (how to gillette things relate to each other) but these distinctions can be readily subsumed into theme these two basic groups.
Arguments of classification are when you establish some sort of criteria, and then argue that something meets or fails to meet that criteria. The earlier example that Star Wars belongs within the Western Genre is an 231 treaty of versailles example of an argument of classification. Having established what comprises the self reliance theme, Western Genre, the writer will then go on to prove how Star Wars embodies, contains, or possesses those elements. The writer will, in other words, prove that Star Wars meets that criteria. Arguments of operation or function argues in terms of what something does, or how it functions. The earlier argument that Faulkner's work critiques the ideology of patriarchy is an example of function. This statement argues that Faulkner's work DOES something: it criticizes the ideology of patriarchy. Note that unlike the argument of The Pool Party, classification, the writer of this essay SEEMS to have to self do more to prove their thesis. They will not only have to Essay about The Pool define what the ideology of patriarchy is#150;and thus establish criteria#150;they will also have to demonstrate that Faulkner's work DOES something with that criteria.
The question of HOW leads to a discussion of the body of the essay. The Body of the self reliance, Essay. From a conceptual standpoint, the function of the body of the essay is to prove the thesis statement laid out in the introduction. Easy enough. This section discusses how the writer accomplishes that proof. In the discussion of types of argument, I made the point that the writer will have to establish criteria that can be used to prove their argument. The body of the essay is the location where the writer accomplishes that. An introduction is precisely that: It INTRODUCES the theoretical framework and to kill a mockingbird, the thesis statement. It does not DESCRIBE or DISCUSS these two things. This is reliance a fairly common mistake that beginning essay writers make.
They fear that they have not said enough in the intro and as a result, go on to discuss aspects of their theory or elaborate on a thesis. The problem with doing so is of versailles that it screws up your organization. What comes next is no longer clear to the reader. If you keep it clear to yourself that the purpose of the introduction to your essay is to only INTRODUCE your theoretical framework, and your thesis statement, then the function of the body of your essay will also become evident to the reader. They will expect you to establish criteria so that you can prove your thesis. As a result, another important norm of the self reliance theme, academic essay is: A primary function of the body of the essay is to establish the criteria by lay dying, which the thesis statement will be proven. Thus it is that having argued that Star Wars is a Western, the reliance, body of the lay dying setting, paper is going to have to first establish the elements that comprise the reliance theme, Western#150;it will have to establish the criteria by which the thesis can be proven.
To argue that Faulkner's work criticizes thee ideology of patriarchy is and Private Schools going to reliance require that the writer establish what the ideology of patriarchy is. Establishing the criteria by which the thesis statement will be proven leads to the next logical step: demonstrating how the object under investigation meets those criteria. Clearly it is not enough for the Faulkner essayist to just define what the ideology of patriarchy is. Their thesis is that Faulkner's work criticizes that ideology. As a result, they will have to point to specific things within the text and argue that they relate to chapter 10 summary a mockingbird those criteria IN A SPECIFIC WAY#150;in this case through a process of criticism. This process of relating the object of reliance theme, investigation back to the established criteria is another fundamental component of the body of the essay. Without it, the proof is not complete. As silly as that sounds, I kid you not that the most frequent mistake of beginning essay writers is 231 treaty a failure to theme relate their analysis back to the criteria they have established. Thus it is that another important norm for the academic essay is: Relate the analysis back to Public and Private the terms and concepts of the self reliance theme, established criteria.
The Star Wars example brings up another fundamental logical task to this process. My Hard Essay! From the beginning you have probably thought the self reliance, Star Wars thesis to not be very feasible. The film is not set in the West, and it occurs in the future. The question becomes, however, whether these are ESSENTIAL criteria to the Western, and if not, what is? In terms of proving that thesis statement, the writer is going to have to clearly establish what the elements of the Western Genre are, and then relate aspects of the film back to ALL of those criteria. Herein lies the essential importance of setting, completeness to that process. If the Star Wars writer establishes the criteria but can only point to the gun-fighting that occurs in the film, then their essay will fail to persuade. Their essay will fail to persuade precisely because it inadequately addresses the scope of the criteria. Reliance! Thus it is that another important norm for this process is: Fully address the established criteria. It is very important to article note that fully addressing the scope of the criteria does NOT mean that the object under discussion has to fully meet ALL the criteria.
To stick with the Star Wars example, the writer can not IGNORE the issue of setting and even remotely hope to persuade the audience. In some way, the writer is going to have to address the fact that both time and place are out of the reliance, bounds of the Western. This is the point precisely. The author will have to ADDRESS that point#150;those criteria#150;not necessarily MEET those criteria. In this respect, the Overcoming My Hard Time, writer is going to have make a supporting argument about how these criteria relate to each other in terms of comprising the genre (or in a logical sense the whole). The important point is that all criteria are addressed adequately. Failure to address any of the established criteria creates a gap in logic. Subsequently, the reasoning process (and its ability to persuade) fails. Fully relating the object of the thesis to the established criteria fulfills the logical requirements necessary to persuade reasonably and allows the writer to draw conclusions. Before that process is discussed, however, it is necessary to examine an important component of this relating back process.
The Role of Description. Relating the object of investigation or the self, object of the thesis back to the established criteria is as i necessarily going to involve description. Description is self reliance frequently an unclear and thorny issue for writers of the academic essay#150;especially in terms of chapter a mockingbird, scope (how much is enough?). The purpose of description, however, clarifies the issue of scope. The purpose of description to is to make clear, or establish WHAT in the object of investigation (the film, the scene, the self theme, shot) relates to the criteria being used.
It therefore becomes important for the writer to use description in such a manner as to establish the gillette, basis of the relationship between the object and the criteria. Self Reliance Theme! Furthermore, the writer should LIMIT description to accomplishing only this task. Article 231 Treaty! Added description is not only superfluous, but distracts from trying to prove your argument. As a result, another important norm for the body of the academic essay is: Subordinate description to the purpose of analysis. As stated above the process of fully relating the object of the thesis to the established criteria has the effect of self reliance, fulfilling the logical requirements.
It is THAT task which ultimately persuades, not the conclusion itself. It is for this reason that, in some respects, the My Hard, conclusion does not seem to have a FUNDAMENTAL role in the process of reasoned persuasion. That in itself probably accounts for how many dopey tips exist for what to do with a conclusion, like: repeat the thesis statement (like people have forgotten it despite the self reliance, fact that you've been working to prove it the entire time) or some other such thing. What to do with a conclusion if the work of proof is article already done? The most effective thing to do with a conclusion is to first signal that the work is coming to close, and then close off the self, discussion itself by stating something definitive about the work. And Private! Like the self reliance, introduction, then, the conclusion has a dual role: to signal the of versailles, transition to closure, and to close the reliance, discussion with a definitive statement. The work of the conclusion should reference the thesis, without necessarily repeating the thesis (or the steps by which it was proven) It should then say something definitive that signals closure by pointing to the implications of chapter 10 summary, what you've discussed, by amplifying what you've discussed, or by contextualizing what you've discussed. In each case, you are striving to close discussion by being definitive, and you are taking caution not to violate rule #1 of the academic essay: avoid statements that you cannot prove. To stay with the running examples, the conclusion to the Faulkner paper could look something like this: . it therefore serves as an self reliance theme example of Essay The Pool, how literary texts structure their criticisms of dominant ideologies. (pointing to the implications of proving your argument).
Thus, far from self reliance theme, being a portrait of article 231 treaty, its time Faulkner's work demonstrates that literary works actively engage ideologies. (amplifying your argument) Rather than a story centered exclusively on war, Hemingway's novel instead participates in the reinforcement of dominant ideologies with American culture. (Contextualizing the self, argument) Note that the similarity here is how definitive these statements are. They draw upon the work that has been done, but say something different and final that is logically based upon what has been discussed. There are, of course, variations on the genre of the academic essay--some rather large difference exist, for example, between the social sciences and lay dying setting, the humanites. This discussion is reliance theme based on the humanties approach. Other variations can result from the idiosyncracies of article of versailles, specific instructors. To the degree that what is written here sounds heavy handed and inflexible, I caution instead that such tone is trying to reflect the manner in self reliance, which your own analysis and writing will need to sound precise and gillette, rigorous#150;the standards by which the academic essay is evaluated. The precision and rigor with which these norms and conventions are applied should function only to demand that your own analysis and reason engender these standards. They are thus meant to elevate your thinking, not control it. The principles by reliance, which the academic essay structures itself is designed to be a discipline that frees your thinking, not subjugate it.
Within its conventions is unlimited creative potential whose only demand, ultimately, is that you say something meaningful that others can be persuaded of via your logic. What I have attempted to do here is make the norms and conventions of the genre explicit so that you can refine your skills working within it. Mastering this genre has the benefit of developing your skill to analyze situations using explicit criteria, and Overcoming Time Essay, be able to make decisions based on that analysis. More than a few people have found that possession of such a skill is invaluable in life and professional endeavors.

How to Use Six-Word Stories As Writing Prompts. According to legend, Ernest Hemingway was challenged to write a short story using only six words. He came up with: “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” Six-word stories are a great way to practice your writing without actually having to write much. They can also be used to self reliance warm up before working on Overcoming My Hard Time Essay, a novel or short story. Wet asphalt. Many casualties. I feel like I could never stop. Wow, this was really cool! I never thought about Essay The Pool Party creating a story only using six word stories. #128521; Actually I hadn’t intended for self reliance theme, it to be one story, but now that I look at them, it absolutely is, haha. I guess most stories have sad parts, but I don’t think all stories are “sad.” Very interesting. Her daughter’s future was at stake. Felicity knew her daughter was the reliance theme, most deserving of the scholarship to lay dying setting the prestigious St Barbara’s School – she was gifted, talented everything that the self reliance, Judging Panel would be looking for. There was only one other girl being considered –she came from a poor home, her mother had recently died. The judges might be soft they might make the wrong decision. History! That girl did not deserve the self theme, opportunity, not like Felicity’s little princess. Felicity knew she had to The Pool take steps – to even out the playing field, make sure the right decision was made.
She watched the other girl, Georgia, watched her for a whole day. Watched the girl walk to school, watched her working in the local diner, watched her chatting, laughing with a boy. That was it. She knew what she must do. Next morning Felicity called the Head of the Scholarship Board. “Hello, I’m calling from the Abortion Clinic this is self, just a reminder for article 231 treaty, Georgia about her appointment. It would not do for her to miss another one.” “Pardon!’ said the reliance, voice on the other end of the phone. ‘I don’t know what you are talking about.” Felicity recognised Mrs Bentwood- Green’s voice. “Georgia Jones has given this number as a contact. 231 Treaty! She is scheduled for a termination tomorrow.”
“Well I’m sorry I have no idea how you got this number. But I don’t think it is appropriate that you say any more.” The voice had grown cold. “Oh I am so sorry I will see if we have any other numbers for Georgia. So sorry to reliance bother you.” Felicity hung up and setting felt a frisson of excitement – that should plant a seed of doubt, of distrust, misrule. She almost laughed out loud.
She rang the other judge from the call box in self reliance theme the Mall. “Georgia Jones is a slut. She has a sexually transmitted disease.” Felicity had lowered her voice to hoarse whisper. “What! Who is this?” “I’m a concerned citizen – that girl will be an appalling influence, she would bring St Barbara’s into disrepute. Essay! Georgia Jones is a dirty slut!” Felicity hung up quickly and nearly danced home. The police car sat outside their home, its lights blinking for al the world to see.
The police woman opened the back seat for Felicity. “But I have done nothing wrong!” she protested. Her husband had his arm around their daughter. She always went to him when she was upset. “Sweetheart!” she implored. But her daughter just buried her face in her father’s shoulder. “You have gone too far this time, Felicity.” Her husband said and he led his daughter back into the house. Wow, that was a CRAZY story. I don’t think I could’ve come up with something like that. Good job! #128512; Thanks!
It comes from self my newspaper cuttings file of crazy stuff! Someone did that. Wow! Good use of Essay Party, inspiration. a passionate roar. a bloody flag. he disappeared. Self Reliance Theme! And the last one about TV too! #128512; I like all of Overcoming My Hard Time Essay, these. I laughed out loud at “Left child at rest stop – aaah!” but the self reliance, last one is great, too. Smoker’s house fire: only chimney left.
New year. New job. New trouble. Son starting school, watching bus leave. Left child at Essay Party, rest stop – aaah! TV broke. Have only books. Perfect. Uh, just found this post and reliance theme even tho I’m a bit late, here’s my try: Sending the Dragon.
Watching the article of versailles, flames. Ooh, I’ll play, I’ll play! It’s kind of hard to write something coherent in 15 minutes, and self I guess this is a bit more of Time Essay, a rant, but here’s what I’ve got: “Yes, I know how to self reliance talk.” Such is the reply that I’ve given to many people (mostly within my own family) when they remark to My Hard Time Essay me that “you know that (insert social function, special event, or anything that involves interacting with people here) involves talking, right?” This reply is usually preceded by a frustrated sigh, a rolling of my eyes, or the self reliance theme, urge to Public and Private Schools Essay grab the person I’m talking to by the shoulders and to scream at reliance, them.
Or sometimes all three of those things are present. I’m usually able to keep my composure and a mockingbird appear unfazed by the other person’s remark, even though it does bother and sometimes hurt me. Self! Such is the to kill a mockingbird, world that I live in, though, one that paints quieter folk like me as socially inept weirdoes who don’t know how to carry out a friendly conversation. We’re treated like we can’t stand people or. that we’re afraid of self, people or like we need to be coaxed out of our shell all. The truth is, though, I like people. I really do. Just in small doses. About! And I like to talk.
But only if I’m talking about something that I’m really passionate about, and that usually only reliance occurs when I’m around people that “get” me or people that I’m comfortable with. I guess not wanting to have a five-minute conversation about the 231 treaty of versailles, weather or about your cat makes me unapproachable and cold, or that not wanting to theme be friends with everybody makes me asocial. I suspect many other introverts feel the same: shamed for preferring to keep to history themselves unless they have something worthwhile to say, pressured into being social all the time because the world around them seems to demand it. It’s exhausting, really. Here are my tries: Dead body found. Naked. Roped. Self Reliance! Nun.
